Director of Learning & Skills

As a Director of a vocational training provider, I was pleased to see Jane Simms’ article in the October issue stress the importance of vocational training and education.  Jane’s arguments: That young people’s introduction to the workplace needs careful management; that there is an excessive focus on academic qualifications at the expense of vocational qualifications and that apprenticeships are potentially powerful development opportunities, all resonate with our experience and the experience of our employer partners.

Like many other training providers, we run apprenticeships and other vocational programmes that are designed to accurately meet the needs of employers looking to recruit young people.  We recognise the flawed “coaching for examination success” approach to some secondary education and our approach is to transform these undoubtedly talented young people from students to work-ready employees, ready to give value from their earliest days in a job.

Correct attitudes to employment and the workplace, the ability to solve real problems and a willingness to learn and improve are attributes our employers seek above an exemplary academic record.  In return, those employers are willing to invest time and money in the continued education and training of suitable candidates.  There is a wealth of government funding available for such programmes, limiting the financial cost for many employers.  However, Jane is right to warn that if employers see this resource as cheap, it will not be valued.  Growing your own workforce in your company’s image is often a wise investment but takes time and resources.  There are many excellent training providers who can advise on funding contributions and will work in partnership with employers to assist developing young people.

Tra-velo-gue around the world

David Piper cycles around the world in his holidays

ValleyoftheGods‘Belligerent cyclist’ , David Piper, has just completed the USA leg of his round the world cycle ride. Reasoning that he could not take off enough time to cycle around the world in one go, he is doing it as time and holidays allow.

Check out the story so far at his Tra-velo-gue. Can you see what he did there? When at home in Cornwall, Davids bike is lovingly prepared by Cytech qualified mechanics at Cycle Logic.

Show your support by donating to his favorite charity, Scope.

Business Breakfast

We had a good turn out from interested companies who visited ATG Training to learn more about apprenticeships, funding and employment law.

I was pleased to meet a number of clients. In particular meeting Carolyn Mumby for the first time was a real treat.

Carolyn is a leader of the new website for Apprentices – www.jigsawww.net You can read her posts here

Grizedale Grinder

by Elaine Powell.

Me and Matt completed the Grizdale Challenge this weekend, the weather was perfect. The course was dry the sun was shining, we were both on new bikes, does life get any better!

The course was 2 laps of the Grizdale forest each lap was 16 miles of thigh burning climbing or super quick descents  After a slow painful 1st lap negotiating my way through traffic and probably walking up most of the uphill single tracks, my 2nd lap seemed to flyby. As the field spread out I was able to let rip on the downhill’s and really got into my pace on the up bits.

The last I saw of Matt was when he muscled his way to the front of the start… (I wish I had done the same) in comparison to me he flew round finishing 20th in a field of 600 plus. I came in 5th out of the ladies I’m not going to tell you what position over all.

It was a fantastic event it was encouraging to see so many competitors and spectators out enjoying the autumn sunshine. Wonder if  the Mary Towneley  Loop Challenge could become as popular?

Gordon Valiant Bicycle Detective

Gordon Valiantincoming email from intrepid assessor for Wales and West Midlands…
Hi all

One of my candidates (James Burley) created this web-site, thought you would find it amusing??

Listen to the Gordon Valiant Bicycle Detective. I also thought the panniers and credit crunch bike lights are especially good ideas.
